A union steward is the first point of contact between your fellow members and the union leadership. Stewards are leaders, advocates, and communicators helping to improve their workplace and strengthen our union. The prospect of becoming a steward may be intimidating, but it's not as challenging as you'd think and you are never alone! Union leadership and your fellow stewards are always there to help. Kickoff meeting for all AFSCME-covered employees at the City of Iowa City (Mixed, Library, Transit). The session will be closed (AFSCME Local 183 members only) to elect our bargaining committee.

Unions 101 is open to everyone in any of our bargaining units at Iowa City, Coralville, Tiffin, or Johnson County. It will be a short, interactive session where we’ll break down what a union is, what our local does, and how you can get involved. Whether you’re new, curious, or just want a refresher, this is a great way to learn your rights, meet fellow members, and build power together.

Nominations and elections for Local 183 officers and boards will be held November 12, 2024. Anyone wishing to nominate someone (themselves included) for office should be present at the November 12, 2024 meeting to make that nomination. Elections will be held the same night for contested seats.
